A Historic Night - 98th Oscar Winners Overview

Finally, the day has come. The 98th Academy Awards have arrived. Here are all the awards of the night, who won them, and some information about the night as a whole. Without further ado, strap in because this may take longer than Adrian Brody's speech from last year.

Best Picture

Of course, this is the award you are here for. Throughout the night, One Battle After Another won 6 awards, most of all Best PIcture. Paul Thomas Anderson pointed out 1975s Best Picture nominees being full of giants, presumably comparing that to todays nominees. He most notably thanked his cast and highlighted Chase Infiniti as the heart of the movie.

Best Lead Actor

  • Timothée Chalamet - Marty Supreme
  • Leonardo DiCaprio - One Battle After Another
  • Ethan Hawke - Blue Moon
  • Michael B. Jordan - Sinners - Winner
  • Wagner Moura - The Secret Agent

This is likely the most divisive award of the night, so obviously being the one everybody was waiting for. This was Micheal B Jordan's first nomination and win, sparking a celebration all throughout the theatre. He shouted out his parents, highlighting their importance, as well as his love for Ryan Coogler and thanking the entire cast for allowing him to fully showcase his skill as both Smoke and Stack. He also pointed out him being a product of the great black filmmakers that came before him.

Best Lead Actress

  • Jessie Buckley - Hamnet - Winner
  • Rose Byrne - If I Had Legs I'd Kick You
  • Kate Hudson - Song Sung Blue
  • Renate Reinsve - Sentimental Value
  • Emma Stone - Bugonia

This is Jessie Buckley's first Oscar win and second nomination. However, this was possibly one of the easiest wins to predict. Most notably, she shouted out her husband, noting that she "wants to have 20,000 more babies with you". She dedicated her award to mothers and motherhood, pointing out that the UK's Mother's Day is the same day.

Best Director

  • Hamnet - Chloé Zhao
  • Marty Supreme - Josh Safdie
  • One Battle After Another - Paul Thomas Anderson - Winner
  • Sentimental Value - Joachim Trier
  • Sinners - Ryan Coogler

This was Paul Thomas Anderson's 2nd win of the night, as well as his 14th nomination. He notably thanked his fellow nominees and called it 'an honour' to be counted among them. He spoke briefly about his love for being in a film crew and for film in general.

Best Animated Feature

  • Arco
  • Elio
  • K-Pop Demon Hunters - Winner
  • Little Amélie or The Character of Rain

  • It Was Just an Accident - France
  • Sentimental Value - Norway - Winner
  • Sirāt - Spain
  • The Voice of Hind Rajab - Tunisia

This is the 7th nomination and 2nd win for Norway. This win was also no surprise, given that Sentimental Value and The Secret Agent were the only movies in this category to also be nominated for Best Picture. This was Joe Letteri's 6th Oscar win, in a very unsurprising category. The winners most notably thanked Weta FX and their entire cast.

Best Costume Design

This was the 4th award of the night, presented by Anna Wintour and Anne Hathaway. This is another award that had an obvious winner, along with being predicted for Production Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling. The winner thanked and 'shared her award' with everybody in the production of this film, including the cast, producers, and, of course, Guillermo Del Toro, the director.

This was Frankenstein's 3rd win of the night, in the most unsurprising categories. The winners most notably thanked Guillermo Del Toro and their production teams, as well as their families and Mary Shelley herself.

Best Makeup and Hairstyling

Best Achievement In Casting

  • Hamnet
  • Marty Supreme
  • One Battle After Another - Winner
  • The Secret Agent
  • Sinners

This is the first time we have seen this award, so the winning parameters were still up in the air. One actor from each film took the stage to thank their respective casting directors, underscoring their long-overdue gratitude on behalf of The Academy. This award ended up being awarded to Cassandra Kulukundis, making history as being the first person to ever win this award.

Best Documentary Feature Film

  • The Alabama Solution
  • Come See Me in The Good Light
  • Cutting Through Rocks
  • Mr. Nobody Against Putin - Winner
  • The Perfect Neighbour

The winners thanked their obligatory family and other nominees. Best Live Action Short Film

  • Butchers Stain
  • A Friend of Dorothy
  • Jane Austen's Period Drama
  • The Singers - Winner
  • Two People Exchanging Saliva - Winner

This award was, surprisingly, a tie. The first winners, for 'The Singers', thanked their family, producers, and cast of 'first timers', as well as Netflix and The Academy. They spoke about the power of music and art to bring people together in these trying times. The second winners, 'Two People Exchanging Saliva', notably thanked the Academy for awarding a 'weird, queer' film with a majority female crew. One winner said something that was both muted and cut away from, undoubtedly sparking controversy on what was said.

Best Animated Short Film

  • Butterfly
  • Forevergreen
  • The Girl Who Cried Pearls - Winner
  • Retirement Plan
  • The Three Sisters

Along with Best Animated Feature, this award was presented by Channing Tatum and Will Arnett. The filmmakers thanked their families for putting up with them throughout this five-year process, as well as their collaborators and their home country of Canada.
